London Trip

Last week I took a bus to London to photograph the Latin community of Elephant and Castle. I chose to focus on the Latin community as what they have done for Elephant and Castle is outstanding. The Latin community has been in the area for 20+ years and hosts more than 80 businesses that are located around Elephant and Castle but mostly in and around the shopping centre, and the first shop opened here in 1992. The building was mostly derelict at the beginning of the 1990s due to the economic crisis in the area, due to this fact, the rent in the area was cheap enabling the Latinos to make a home for themselves, and they were then willing to invest in the businesses.

Now, the shopping centre is facing demolition, they are hoping to attract higher-valued, well-known chains who can afford to rent the spaces for triple what the current occupants pay. As a result of this, the Latin community are being displaced by economic development in the place that they helped bring back from becoming derelict. The shopping centre hopes to bring in better well-known chains that are able to pay triple what the current occupants are paying, so this gives very little room for the current community to have a chance. Once, the council named the area the "Latin Quarter" as a result of all the positive changes the latin community made.

Below there is a small selection of the photographs that I took during my time there.
